The Forum was instrumental in calling attention to the lack of women in public positions, and its 1996 report on gender equity on boards and commissions led directly to the 1998 legislation that says appointments should proportionately represent each gender. In 2003 it collaborated with Peace College to establish the NC Center for Women in Public Service, www.nccwps.org, to address the “supply” side of this problem and prepare women to seek and serve in public office. The picture is of the graduating class of the Center’s 2004 Summer Institute. The Women’s Forum continues as a major funder of the Center, and Forum members serve in several leadership roles with the Center.
