Thirty members and friends in the Central Region- Triangle Area – met for lunch on December 5, 2011 at the Embassy Suites in Raleigh. The table conversation was more than lively and a host of topics were discussed by the women present. Folks brought toiletries and feminine hygiene products for the Women’s Center of Wake County. Others made generous personal contributions for the Center in keeping with the holiday spirit.
Our guest speakers were Teresa Pierrie, the new principal of the soon to open Wake Women’s Leadership Academy and Julia Taylor, the incoming Dean of the Academy. The Leadership Academy will offer young women in middle and high school the opportunity to participate in a learning environment that is uniquely designed to challenge each young woman as an individual. (There will also be a young men’s academy.) The focus of the Academy will be to help young women focus on their personal strengths and talents and discover the “diamonds” that each young person has within herself. The young women will be challenged to be the leaders of their own learning. In addition, they will challenged to become leaders within their own communities writ large to include the school community, their local community and the global community. The goal is to support each student to eventually become a leader within their chosen profession.
The Women’s Leadership Academy will be a choice/early college school that will eventually serve grades 6 through 13.
Teresa and Julia shared their knowledge and background in the unique needs of young women. They shared how young women would be selected for the Academy. The Academy will open in September with a 6th, 7th and 9th grade.
