What is the best career decision that you have made?
When we moved to Oregon, I made a cold call at an international consulting engineering firm. It led to a job as their first full-time promotional writer. The person who hired me was a woman. I continued to work for them even after we moved back to Wilmington. The result of that cold call prepared me for the UNCW job.
If you had to do it over again, what would you do differently?
I would be more aggressive in salary negotiations.
How have women helped further your career?
Being a member of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) in Raleigh and Wilmington gave me role models for strong women achievers as I was just starting my career. The woman who encouraged me to take leadership positions in the AAUW led to my having confidence to tackle other leadership roles.
