Juanita Bryant of Raleigh has been honored by the North Carolina Democratic Women as the 2012 Democratic Woman of the Year.

Susan “Smitty” Dotson-Smith has been appointed by Governor Bev Perdue to be one of seven District Court judges in Buncombe County.


Women’s Forum Fall Meeting

The Women’s Forum will meet on Saturday Nov. 17 in Research Triangle Park.

Saturday’s agenda will include:

  • A look back at the NC Women Matter effort that the Forum championed
  • A briefing on the Council for Women report on the status of women in NC
  • A preview of the upcoming legislative session

Beth Wood, North Carolina Auditor, will speak to the Forum members and guests.


Status of Women in NC: new data released

Gov. Bev Perdue has announced that preliminary findings of the 2012 Status of Women in North Carolina report indicate that women in North Carolina have made significant social and economic advances since 2000, but the need for further progress remains. For the first time since 1996, the state is also releasing a report on the Status of Women. Preliminary data is available now, with the full report to come in October.


Remembering Betty Ann Knudsen


Betty Ann Knudsen, charter member of the Women’s Forum, died on July 27, 2012. She will be greatly missed.


Lunch for Southeast Region: Aug. 4

The Southeast Region will meet for lunch on August 4 to hear from Allen Monroe, director of the NC Aquarium.


Forum leadership for 2012-2013

Carol Spruill of Raleigh assumes leadership of the Forum, backed by a strong team. Learn more about the 2012-2013 board of directors. Members may review Carol’s remarks at the spring meeting where she was elected president.


Forum leads GOTV effort


The Women’s Forum, and president Pat Orrange, have been instrumental in pulling together a nonpartisan coalition that will work to get out the women’s vote in 2012.

The new coalition, NC Women Matter, had a kickoff meeting on Saturday, March 10 in Greensboro, and followup on May 10 that laid out their plans in more detail.

As of August 2012, they have completed a letter writing campaign to encourage drop-off women voters to get to the polls in the fall, and they are starting plans for additional letters, phone banking, and letter to the editor and op-ed campaigns. To connect with the coalition see their website
